This week we received the news that Lelo Pleasure Objects has increased its wholesale and retail pricing. We have been a huge proponent of Lelo throughout our years. Lelo is truly the first boutique high-quality sex toy maker in the business. They have been around for over a decade now, and their products are extremely reliable, body safe, and ergonomically designed. Lelo has not had a retail price increase in 10 years. However, this past year there has already been an increase in wholesale price without adjusting the MAP (Minimum Advertised Price). My guess is retailers complained they were not getting a big enough cut of the profit. In turn, what did Lelo do? They increased both the wholesale and retail MAP price. We will still stock Lelo products, but I sincerely hope they haven’t priced themselves right out of business. MAP pricing has gone up as much as $30 per item. That’s substantial, we know.
What is MAP Pricing?
All of the high-quality, high-end sex toy lines require partner retailers to agree on a MAP price. This means we sign a contract that we will charge our customers a minimum price across the board. We can not give discounts, unless the brand manufacturer allows us to do so. Additionally, we can be asked to discontinue the sale of these products if we are caught selling them for less than the minimum price.
You may wonder why they do this. There are a couple of reasons. One is to secure and ensure brand authenticity. Many of you may know that high-end sex toys, such as Lelo, are being pirated by knock-off companies all the time (mainly in China). If you see a Lelo product for half of the price, most likely it is a fake. Who knows what the product is made out of? It’s probably not F.D.A. medically approved silicone like the real thing. However, the package and product looks exactly like the real thing. Just think “Coach” hand bags. Secondly, you may be buying from an unauthorized distributor and/or retailer. These companies often are fly by night. Try finding them if the toy doesn’t work and you need to claim your warranty. You run the risk of these companies selling the fakes too.
I know price is a concern, but when it comes to high-quality sex toys, you have to know we are selling them for the prices the manufacturer requires. I know we are all out to get a deal, but think about what you are buying. A Lelo or any other high-quality sex toy is a personal hygiene product. If you are going to spend the money to get a medical grade sex toy, make sure it the real thing. Make sure you don’t compromise your health for price.
