May is here…time to celebrate National Masturbation Month!
In 1995, Surgeon General, Joycelyn Elders, was fired after suggesting masturbation should be added to all public school health education curriculum. Good Vibrations, a sex-positive adult retailer in San Fransisco, decided to honor Elders and masturbation on May 14th. The idea exploded and now we recognize the month of May as National Masturbation Month. Masturbation is alive and well. It’s good for all of us. What better way to learn about your body, your sexual pleasure zones, and yourself. Talk about self-empowerment.
Benefits of Masturbation
Women and men can all benefit from masturbation. Orgasms are good for our health. Weather you have a partner or not, self-pleasure is key to knowing what you like, having great sex, and feeling healthy.
Good for Women:
- Self-Love.Getting to know your body is incredibly empowering. Once you feel great about your own body, you can appreciate yourself and what you can give to a partner.
- Better sex with your Partner. Women who masturbate and experiment with themselves, know what they like and don’t like in bed. Using a sex toy can help with this process too. In turn, you can guide your partner for a more enriching sexual encounter.
- Great for the Vagina. Kegels aren’t the only ting that can keep your pelvic floor nice and strong. Orgasms have the same effect. The stronger your pelvic floor muscles, the less likely you are to suffer from urinary incontinence promoting overall better health. Orgasms help with menstrual pain too.
Good for Men:
- Helps Fight Cancer. Studies suggest men who ejaculate 5 times per week are 30% less likely of developing prostate cancer. Disease-causing toxins build up in your urogenital track, and masturbation can help flush it out.
- Stay Harder. As you age, you lose muscle tone – even down there. Regular masturbation or sex can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles to help prevent erectile dysfunction and incontinence.
- Last Longer: Practice makes perfect. Masturbation can help men train their ejaculation time, according to sexpert Dr. Ava Cadell. If it takes you 2 minutes solo, try for 3 the next time. You can train yourself for optimal response with a partner in about a month.
Great for Everyone:
- Sleep Better. The endorphins released during orgasm naturally promote deeper sleep. Masturbate and you’ll be to night-night land in no time.
- Good for the Heart. Self-stimulation increases blood flow naturally and gets the heart pumping. Women, especially, who experience more orgasms are less susceptible to heart disease (women’s #1 killer). Men’s tickers could use a good pumping too.
- Stress Reliever. We get a natural high when we experience pleasure. Dopamine and oxytocin release to lift your spirits, boost our satisfaction, and activate the reward circuits in your brain. You don’t need to be with someone else to feel good. A private solo session can do the trick.
